Guests:

Betsy Dohm and Jordan Patterson who want to become new members, and Deacon Michael Ryan from St Vincent DePaul Society’s Food Pantry.

Deacon Ryan put on a presentation on the Food Pantry, their history and who they serve. There are 1,437 registered families, which translates to roughly 4,696 individual people who benefit from the pantry in the Rockton/Roscoe/South Beloit/Beloit area. All of the money to the pantry goes towards food, no administration expenses, nor does it go to the church. You do not have to be Catholic or prove need to receive food. Families may only come once a month.

Scott mentioned to the club that he had spoken with Charlotte at the Christmas party regarding giving the local food pantries substantial donations this spring as the Wimpy fund has grown every year. They estimated that the fund has about $10,000 surplus over what is needed to maintain the donations we give routinely using this fund.

There were various discussions on the size of the donation we should give. Motion by Zig, and 2nd by Augie to donate $5000.00 to the food pantry.

There was more discussion on the donation, regarding who the food pantry serves. The pantry is located in South Beloit, that serves parishioners in Rockton, Roscoe and South Beloit. There are some residents of Beloit who also come to the pantry, as well they have shared food with a WI parish as well as the Rockton Food pantry when one has had surplus and the other has a need. The areas surrounding Rockton tend to have more need than Rockton itself in this area.

There was a vote via hand count – Motion passed in favor of donating $5000.00 to the St Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

There was to be another guest at the meeting, but he got the time wrong and was unable to attend. Scott gave a brief rundown of his purpose. High School kids are raising money for Jason Heller, son of a Hononegah teacher who needs a heart transplant. The surgery reportedly is going to cost $500,000. Motion by Frank and 2nd by Josh to donated $500 to the fund and a pair of VIP passes for OSD for their silent auction. Motion passed.

Dale Adams is making a request on behalf of the Stateline Mass Transit system. The service is up and running for people in the Rockton/Roscoe and South Beloit area. It is serving about 100 people a month right now. There are discount fares for the elderly and handicapped. It is unknown how much the Roscoe and South Beloit Lions have donated. It was noted we gave $1000 at the beginning with anticipation of giving more after the service was up and running. There is funding of $35,000 from each community as well as federal and state funds. This donation would go towards expenses to run the service. Motion by Jack to donate $5000 and 2nd By Dick Adams. Vote via hand count – motion carries.

Correspondence:

Thank you from the Special Olympics for our $1000 donation to the polar plunge team.

Letter from “Rockton, The Beautiful Village” committee requesting a donation. This committee is the former ‘Rockton In Bloom’ committee, they are not competing this year but do want to continue with the beautification process this spring. They are requesting a 3 year commitment of $1000 per year. Marianne is on that committee and suggests a $250 donation is valid for this year, and wait on future years to see how it goes. Official motion by Marianne and 2nd by Josh to donate $250 to the committee. Motion carries.

New & Old Business:

Rose Day update: Dick Adams is happy to report that we sold over twice as many roses this year as we did last year and our net profit is $1777.00. We delivered about 240 dozen and sold 225 dozen, so for the first time in years we were about even there. Thanks to everyone for their efforts to sell roses!

Sight & Sound: Cathy has to have the tickets back by 5/1/08, please drop them off to her office by 4/25/08. We get 40% of what we sell, so this is a pretty easy fundraiser.

Update on OSD: Scott reports the current OSD 2nd stage plans appear to be falling through. Wanted people’s thoughts on pursing other ideas or scrapping altogether, people seemed to want to go forward with some kind of plan, will follow through with more discussion at next OSD meeting. Marianne reported that the blood drive will be from 4 – 8 on that Thursday.

Casino Trip: Kathy needs about 13 more people to guarantee the casino trip. Scott says he will cover the cost of any shortage so that the trip ‘is a go.’ If you still want to sign up call or email Kathy G by 4/29. $13/person, May 3rd, bus leaves the dome parking lot at HHS at 10 am and is back by 6:30 pm. We have room for a total of 54 people.

Motion by Scott 2nd by Zig to adjourn. Motion PASSED!

After party at fibs.
